A Summer Vacation in Pizzo: Part II

First day in Pizzo we go out for a nice hike in the morning. Awe, what a life!

Sisi with Nonna Sara.

The view just steps away from the family house in Pizzo.

See all the little black dots in the sea? Sea urchins. Lot of them.

One of the nights I made a big Mexican ( or maybe Cali-Mex) dinner for about 20 people. Gimmys family seemed to like it. But I dont think they were much into the salsas...

Sisi with Andrea. What an adorable little boy he is! He is Gimmy's Cousin's son, who is about 2 years old, and when he met Sisi he would say "Mio" which means "mine".

No Mexican night is complete without Tequila Sunrises!

Enjoying a walk, or maybe... sometimes Sisi would get tired in the backpack, therefore the grumpy face.

On our way back home from the town Pizzo only about a mile away.

Swimming with Mamma!

Sisi loved the water.

Except when it got in her face.

On my birthday we took a drive to the nearby mountain range, called the Sila, and toured some small towns. There were two small man made lakes in the area, the forrest was very thick and there was also a plain on the top on the range where there was farming.

At one of the towns there was a "Solo Funghi" shop ( "Only Mushrooms")

And we did some off roading.

My Birthday Party! Yes, thats right, I am ONLY 23! I can hardly believe it myself.

My cake that says "Buon Compleanno" ( Happy Birthday)

Thanks to the Slaggermans for bringing me a few bags of marshmallows, I got to teach the Italians how to roats mallows on my birthday! This was a HIT! You can see my excitment.

The funnel cloud.

We took a trip to Scilla. Which is a small town on the sea that is mentioned in the Odyssey as the location of the sea monster named Scylla ( Greek mythology name is Scylla). It is a very cute little town with restaurants, hotels, bed and breakfasts, bagnos, bars, and its also famous for the swordfishing. We had dinner at a pizzeria with a fantastic view over the sea and we watched the night fall dark and the lights off Sicilia. There would also be an occational container ship that would go by or a cruise ship.

Back in Pizzo, this is the "swimming hole", "Buon bagno!" they say in Italian, which I cant think of a translation, but I think its similar to saying "Have fun!" but its specifically directled to the swimming/beach/sea experience.

Getting cleaned up!

Italians and their festivities! On the 15th of August there is a big party, just for the fact that its STILL SUMMER!

Sisi playing with Zia Daniela and Zio Vincenzo

And another fantastic time to roast some more marshmallows, "S'mores!"

The party last all day and we are supposed to stay awake until midnight. So Vincenso lights up a bon fire. We would be sent to jail for this in California.

At one point we decided to drive around the "toe of the boot" of Italy. It was a fun trip but not one I would suggest to people who have never been to Italy before, since it is not what one would expect at all, or at least not for me..

Our First stop was in Reggio Calabria, one of the 3 largest cities in the region of Calabria. We stopped here specifically to see these bronzes. These were found in the sea off the coast from a small town called Riace by a ordinary old subba diver on vacation. Apparently he saw as arm and the rest was history. Here for more about the Riace Bronzes.

( Photo from internet, as I obverved the NO FOTO sign)

This is at Le Castelle

The next stop was at Capo Colonna, which is where some Roman ruins are and one (remaining) Greek column. This location is close to Riace- where the two bronzes for the men where found.

They were doing a massive excavaion so there were wood pathways and everything was fenced up. I had to take this picture of the column from about 500 feet away threw a fence. Thank you zoom lens.

This is what surprised me about the trip. More of the land looks like this. With a few small, very, very small town every once and a while.

Back in Pizzo again! Nice beard Babbo!

Vincenzo, burning stuff again. He's considered to be the exterior maintenance guy. And Gimmy is interior maintenance guy. While we were in Pizzo Gimmy had: made a new wall with dry wall, a new sliding door, added a pendant light, fixed two another pendent lights, added a security camera, and fixed the electrical wiring.

Evening swimm.

Playing with Mario on the terrazza. Sisi loved this yellow walker.

Serra San Bruno, a little moutain town with a lot of hiking.

(Photo on chruch in the town, from internet)

Back again in Pizzo! Swimming time! This bathing suit she is wearing was mine.

We went to the Pizzo cemetery to pay respect to Gimmy's late father, Fernando.

Another trip, to Badolato. The name is great: Ba-do-la-to. And it is a fantastic town on the hill near the sea.

These sign are pointing down a steep hill, the photo can not capture the grade.

See the slope in the road?

An original sign from the days of Mussolini

Badolato

Back in Pizzo, swimming again.

Little cutie!

The jellyfish. There were only a few says when we saw some jellyfish. This day there was this one pretty close to where we swim so so had fun taking pictures of it.

Me with my sisters-in-law, Maria Teresa ( left), and Daniela (right)

Vincenzo and his fisherman friend playing with Mario and Sisi.

Sisi is holding a Pinocchio, so Italian.

The neibors are farmers and one day we saw them tie up 2 goats in the yard to clear the grass before the next crop to be planted.

Me, swimming.

Gimmy, swimming. See the sea urchins- the black dots)

Sisi and the rocks.

One night gimmy made sushi from the fresh tuna Vincenzo brough home one day.

It was fantastic.

Gimmy went out one day to gather some sea urchins.

Preparing the sea urchin for eating.

Fresh uni!

The end! Until next summer!
